Project name: Floresta Vermelha (Red Forest)
Objectives
The Red Forest project aims at shooting a short film using original soundtrack and original screenplay. The intention is to shoot using the standards of digital cinema of at least 2k resolution (but hopefully CIMAX) and RAW recording. To get there, we aim to shoot it with Elphel, use only free software and document on the process.
Current status of the project - nearly finished
The movie was shot on the months of October/November, 2012. It was then edited and exhibited for ~150 people during a party on November the 30th, in which the band that created the soundtrack performed the music live. Since then, we have been focused on finishing the soundtrack and the audio (done by January, 2013) and are currently finishing the color grading.Last update on the project status (this section): March the 1st, 2013.
Return to community
As a project, we focused on three main returns for the community: recording audio with the camera, creating and documenting on the workflow for video editing (RAW format) in Linux and on creating automation scripts for this workflow. These steps are all covered in details in two major articles, A somewhat comprehensible guide to using Elphel as a Digital Cinema camera (in English) and digital cinema workflow under linux – automation (in English). We also wrote an introductory article in Portuguese explaining the project in this language.

The automation scripts are all GPL-licensed and have been forwarded to Elphel's support list, but they are more easily accessed on the project's GitHub account.
Workshops
To be able to shoot our movie in an open way, we ran a couple of workshops, in which we introduce the Elphel camera and the whole editing workflow for it in Linux. You can see some pictures of the first one here and in a blog post here. These workshops included a mini short movie (2 1/2 min), to test how to use Elphel for recording in the field, in conditions similar to those we will have in our production. The picture below shows Cinelerra's editing project, before going to post-production:

General planning
A somewhat updated schedule for our project can be seen below:

You should notice that there is a somewhat large period before the actual shooting takes place. This period is dedicated to research and documentation on the process, especially about everything that relates to the use of the camera for the shooting.

Return to community
The research should focus on the incertain terrains of:

1. How to record sound with the camera or using external devices;
2. Establish the editing workflow in linux and the image post-production workflow in linux. This project considers working only with free software. This step is the continuation of the research presented here and here;

3. Automate via scripts the steps of:
*(a) files convertion prior to editing (piped scripting);
*(b) creation of a human-readable list of files for post-production from Cinelerra's editing XML file; and
*(c) replacement of final TIF files in theis original folders for final render.

The last item (3) is exemplified by this workflow:

The results of the research will be published as articles under a GNU Free Documentation License and following the formats of the previous articles.

The scripts resulting from the 3rd item above will also be published under a GPL license and be freely available for the community.

Shooting and editing (free software)
It must be pondered that how we are going to shoot depends on the results we may or may not have achieved on financing the movie. Basically, we should consider something between all-voluntary work and a complete professional environment, with everyone getting paid and with more time to dedicate to the movie. We have to be prepared to both scenarios.

Editing, post editing and everything else that relates to the movie (except, possibly already recorded soundtrack) will be done using free software.
Workshops
To help drawing attention to the project, spreading the word and help making contacts, we consider running some production workshops to talk about the movie and the production process to anyone who might be interested, but with especial attention to the linux community. Those workshops will be technical-based and, without being too optimistic, there is good chance of finding partners to them.
About the movie and the screenplay
The movie will be Portuguese-spoken. The screenplay, written in Celtix (GPL), focus on inside environments so that we have better control over scenario and shooting situations. Since the script is simple, we may consider asking someone to write an alternative screenplay while at research phase, but it must be noted that the existent one was written simple due to the nature of the project. It would be dramatic to discover we would have to shoot a scene without means of doing so.

Once finished, the movie will be available online. It must be said that all the documentation for the project will be under open licenses as stated in the agreement. The movie, however, is bound to a complex mixture of copyrights and will probably be released under a Creative Commons license. If everything goes fine, we should be able to write some press releases and distribute a few copies of the final version to the media in DVD format.

The automation scripts are all GPL-licensed and have been forwarded to Elphel's support list, but they will soon be published apropriately on a recently-created account at GitHub.
News - The most up-to-date news, news on the production of the film and on this research can be found at the posts in our blog (in Portuguese): florestavermelha.org. You can also check the technical stuff at our other blog.

Articles - For those interested in how to use Elphel cameras to shoot movies, an extensive article on the theme in English is nearly ready and can be viewed in this link. There is also a Portuguese-written article, aimed to be more didatic and less technical.

Workshops - To be able to shoot our movie in an open way, we are also running a couple of workshops, in which we introduce the Elphel camera and the whole editing workflow for it in Linux. These workshops included a mini short movie (2 1/2 min), to test how to use Elphel for recording in the field, in conditions similar to those we will have in our production. The picture below shows Cinelerra's editing project, before going to post-production:

Videos - Currently, there are three videos we made in order to test and/or exemplify the use of Elphel cameras for movies - the first two (no audio) exemplify the RAW workflow for video in linux and the latter (Portuguese-spoken) is a minishort movie we shot for testing the setup on the field (Elphel's footage occuring after the girl enters the house until the end). There is also a very good movie made by the Centre of Spanish Culture (English subtitles) on our project.

Automation scripts - The automation scripts to improve video editing in linux, using Elphel's RAW files as material, are nearly ready and fully functional. The only things that are missing are (1) using the original footage dimensions to update Cinelerra's XML at the very last step - this is being made manually; (2) polishing the code and comments on the scripts; and (3) licensing the scripts for publishing. The last improvements are bound to occur on the editing phase of our project, scheduled to happen in November-2012.

Basically, we should consider something between all-voluntary work and a complete professional environment, with everyone getting paid and with more time to dedicate to the movie. We have to be prepared to both scenarios.

Notes
* The following guide was written for (K)Ubuntu OS
* The camera has a web-based interface and it should work in any OS (Firefox browser is recommended)

Lens Mount
Lens Adapter Ring
Check if you need the C/CS adapter ring to connect your own lenses.

Connection
When the camera is properly connected to a PC the leds on the back will go solid yellow and blinking green.

1. Standard PoE Injector

2. 12V Power Module (ONLY FOR 12V CAMERAS)

Network
The default camera IP address is 192.168.0.9* ("ping -b 192.168.0.255" if it accidentally has some other address)

* Ensure that your PC or router/switch, the camera is connected to, has an IP address from the same subnetwork – that is 192.168.0.xxx.
* When you get to the camera's home page - the IP address can be changed from the Preferences page.

Now, in case you IP belongs to another subnetwork (for example, your IP is 192.168.1.xxx), you may not be able to access the camera - therefore, you won't be able to change its preferences. What you have to do is use Elphel's Live USB. Change your BIOS settings to be able to boot from a USB device that has Elphel's ditro installed. Once the system from the USB is running, let its program map the connected cameras and connect to them. Mind you, with the live distro the default IP address (192.168.0.9) should work. From the camera's homepage, go to System Preferences -> Network and change the IP address to 192.168.1.9 (in the example we are using). You can now reboot. Everything now will be working as expected.

SSH/FTP connection
Default user is:
Login:     root
Password:  pass

Camera Index Page Menu
http://192.168.0.9 *

* It is recommended to use the Firefox browser.

* Main Applications menu items:
* Camera Control Interface
* Disk Recorder (only use this if you have an actual disk: HDD, SSD, compactflash card connected to your camera)
* Parameter Editor
* Terminal
* System Preferences
* File Browser / Text Editor
Help Tips
Getting the first images
camvc
In the Camera Control Interface (camvc): "Shift+Click" on the button to save.

shell script
wget http://192.168.0.9:8081/bimg -O filename.jpeg

PHP
In PHP it will be just a system() or exec() call:
system("wget http://192.168.0.9:8081/bimg -O filename.jpeg");

Camera GUI(camvc) Controls

Watch/record video stream over the network
There are several ways to watch/record video streams from the camera:

1. watch: camvc
First click on an icon with a "screen" (the 3rd one from the left) and then change the display mode to "a guy on a bicycle".

This icon is only active if you have a media plugin installed in your web browser. Elphel's live USB uses "gecko-mediaplayer" together with "gnome-mplayer". Other media plugins (such as the VLC plugin) also may work. In case the "guy on a bicycle" icon is inactive, check if you have one of them installed - in case it's still not working you may have to uninstall "totem-mozilla" (this is the case for Debian Squeeze and Iceweasel).

2. watch: player GUI / command line
To watch the video stream with MPlayer or VLC open the rtsp://192.168.0.9:554. You can use either a player GUI or a command line. Here is an example command from Linux terminal window:
Mplayer
mplayer  rtsp://192.168.0.9:554 -vo x11 -zoom
VLC
vlc rtsp://192.168.0.9:554 -V x11 --rtsp-caching=50
The default setting for rtsp-caching is 5000 milliseconds which means the stream is delayed 5 seconds which is not very handy for real-time video preview so the above commands starts VLC with it set to 50 ms

3. record: command line
mencoder rtsp://192.168.0.9:554 -ovc copy -fps <fps> -o <file_name>.mov

where
<fps>        - approximate value of the frame frequency (this parameter is mandatory);
<file_name>.mov - the name of an output file

or
vlc rtsp://192.168.0.9:554 -V x11 --sout file/ogg:<file_name>.mov

Navigate through the 1st table links. They cover most if not all of the camera parameters.

On-camera script "parsedit.php" - through a browser or AJAX GET call
The response is in XML form:

Read:
http://192.168.0.9/parsedit.php?immediate&PAR1&PAR2
Change:
http://192.168.0.9/parsedit.php?immediate&PAR1=VAL1&PAR2=VAL2

Note 1: It's just if the parameter value is specified it will be applied. The call can have mixed specified and unspecified parameters.

Note 2: The new value is read on the next call.

Keeping settings after power off
http://192.168.0.9 -> "Parameter Editor"

Scroll to the 2nd table.
* "Save" button
* Optionally write some comment and press "Update" to the right of it. Next time the camera will boot with these settings.
* To set the parameter group used at boot time, select it and press "Update Default" button.

Current status of the project
We have started! Our project has started in May-2012 and is currently running.

The most up-to-date news, news on the production of the film and on this research can be found at the posts in our blog (in Portuguese): florestavermelha.org.

For those interested in how to use Elphel cameras to shoot movies, we are writing an extensive article on the theme. The aim is for it to be a reference worldwide, so it is being written in English. Currently, it is under construction but with full written sections, and can be seen at this link. Expect great update on it soon, in August 2012.

To be able to shoot our movie in an open way, we are also running a couple of workshops, in which we introduce the Elphel camera and the whole editing workflow for it in Linux.

1. How to record sound with the camera or using external devices;
2. Establish the editing workflow in linux and the image post-production workflow in linux. This project considers working only with free software. This step is the continuation of the research presented here and here;

3. Automate via scripts the steps of:
*(a) files convertion prior to editing (piped scripting);

You should notice that there is a somewhat large period before the actual shooting takes place. This period is dedicated to research and documentation on the process, especially about everything that relates to the use of the camera for the shooting.

Return to community
The research should focus on the incertain terrains of:

1. How to record sound with the camera or using external devices;
2. Establish the editing workflow in linux and the image post-production workflow in linux. This project considers working only with free software. This step is the continuation of the research presented here and here;

3. Automate via scripts the steps of:
*(a) files convertion prior to editing (piped scripting);

Nightly Builds as well as a release history can be downloaded from sourceforge:

Inside the folder you just downloaded, change the permissions of the ElphelVision.sh to enable execution.

Open a terminal and run

./ElphelVision.sh
Starting ElphelVision
By default we provide startup scripts for Linux, Mac and Windows.

This is basically a file that runs:

java -jar -Xmx256m ElphelVision-dist.jar --debuglevel 3

It is recommended to run ElphelVision from the commandline and not through a GUI to get error messages, debug output, etc.

Startup Parameters
Example:

ElphelVision-dist.jar --debuglevel 3

The following arguments are available:

--help

Displays the list of available startup parameters

--no-camera

This is useful for running the software without a camera. It will disable all network communication. That way the software just pretends do interact with a camera. For demo purposes or if you want to develop GUI elements without needing a camera.

--debuglevel N

Controls the amount of log and error messages you see in the console

Possible values for N:

0 - none

1 - only errors

2 - errors and warnings (default)

3 - everything
Common Problems
Once you run ElphelVision, there are some known problems that may happen. Here you can see their description and their solution.

There is a black screen covering the streaming.
The first one is that you are able to open ElphelVision and connect to the camera, but a black screen shows up and you are not able to see what's being streamed by the camera. You will notice there is a live histogram below and that there are two Java instances (windows) running. You are also able to view a stream coming from the camera using MPlayer or VLC. This is what you might see:

If you look at the terminal, in the first lines of the output there may be something like this:

=====================================================
ElphelVision - Apertus Viewfinder Software
http://www.apertus.org
Version: 0.57
=====================================================

[14:38:47.853] LOG: Looking for default.style
[14:38:47.876] LOG: default.style found - Styles Loaded
[14:38:47.882] LOG: Translucency is supported by current Graphics Environment
[14:38:47.882] LOG:PERPIXEL_TRANSPARENT is supported by current Graphics Environment

There is a warning there saying that "OpacityControl" is not supported. This basically means the driver for your graphics card doesn't support this function. You can solve this issue updating your drivers. If you can't update your drivers, then you will have to close the second Java instance (window) to remove it from the front of everything else. This will be uncomfortable, however, because this window will show up again whenever you change any of ElphelVision's settings.
You have a live histogram but there is no streaming.
This problem is somewhat similar to the above, except that you cannot see the streaming coming from the camera, even though the live histogram detects any changes in ambient light. You are also sure this is not the black screen mentioned above, it's just the streaming that is not showing up.
By taking a look at the output coming from the terminal you've ran ElphelVision, there should be an error somewhat similar to this:

[08:35:22.930] LOG: Starting VLC Video
[0x9d18f30] live555 demux error: Failed to connect with rtsp://192.168.1.9:554
[0x97551d0] main input error: open of `rtsp://192.168.1.9:554' failed
[0x97551d0] main input error: A entrada não pode ser aberta
[0x97551d0] main input error: O VLC não é capaz de abrir o MRL 'rtsp://192.168.1.9:554'. Verifique o registro de erros para maiores detalhes.

After a while, there should be also this output in your terminal:

[0x8481d70] main input error: ES_OUT_RESET_PCR called
[0x8496870] live555 demux error: no data received in 10s, aborting

This is actually not an ElphelVision's error. You are having general problems with getting the streaming from the camera. The fix to this problem is that you probably have a package missing and these programs (MPlayer, VLC) are not being able to decode the stream properly. Try installing a package called "gecko-mediaplayer". If you have "totem-mozilla", uninstall it because otherwise your system may try to use it instead of gecko. Now the stream should show up.

=====================================================
ElphelVision - Apertus Viewfinder Software
http://www.apertus.org
Version: 0.57
=====================================================

[14:38:47.853] LOG: Looking for default.style
[14:38:47.876] LOG: default.style found - Styles Loaded

Overview
This guide explains how to install ElphelVision on your Elphel camera and a computer running Ubuntu (32bit) connected to your camera over Ethernet.

This guide assumes that you have successfully downloaded the required files.

Installation
FTP Transfer
Use an FTP client of choice (eg. Filezilla) and connect to your Elphel camera.

Default IP: 192.168.0.9
User: root / PW: pass

Upload the complete "ElphelVision" directory in "elphel/Apertus/camera www/" to the "/mnt/flash/html/" directory of your Elphel camera

You can test if everything worked properly by opening a browser and going to:

http://192.168.0.9/ElphelVision/elphelvision_interface.php?cmd=status (replace 192.168.0.9 with your Elphel cameras IP).

If you get lots of xml output installation was successful.
Running ElphelVision
Requirements:

Java JRE (Java Runtime Environment)
Careful, OpenJDK produced some drawing artefacts with Text in Buttons, you will get strange color fringes.

Install the Official Java JRE from Sun/Oracle:

first enable the "Canonical Partners" Software Source (Software Sources -> Other Software: enable "Canonical Partners - Software packaged by Canonical for their partners")

then update the software index and run:

sudo apt-get install sun-java6-jre

You can have both of them installed side-by-side

Just installing new Java flavours does not change the default Java pointed to by /usr/bin/java. You must explicitly set this:

To see the current configuration and possibilities:

sudo update-java-alternatives -l

To set the XXX java version as default.

sudo update-java-alternatives -s XXXX

For Sun Java 6 this would be

sudo update-java-alternatives -s java-6-sun

To ensure that the correct version is being called:

java -version

VLC
For ElphelVision you require a VLC version 1.1.4 or higher

sudo apt-get install vlc

Careful: Ubuntu maintained software channel might be outdated (it was the case for some time with 10.04), check: http://www.videolan.org/vlc/download-ubuntu.html for a guide how to get a recent version
You should now go to this User Guide to continue.

Getting the first images
camvc
In the Camera Control Interface (camvc): "Shift+Click" on the button to save.

browser
http://192.168.0.9:8081/bimg

shell script
wget http://192.168.0.9:8081/bimg -O filename.jpeg

PHP
In PHP it will be just a system() or exec() call:
system("wget http://192.168.0.9:8081/bimg -O filename.jpeg");

Camera GUI(camvc) Controls

Watch/record video stream over the network
There are several ways to watch/record video streams from the camera:

1. watch: camvc
First click on an icon with a "screen" (the 3rd one from the left) and then change the display mode to "a guy on a bicycle".

2. watch: player GUI / command line

3. record: command line
mencoder rtsp://192.168.0.9:554 -ovc copy -fps <fps> -o <file_name>.mov

where
<fps>        - approximate value of the frame frequency (this parameter is mandatory);
<file_name>.mov - the name of an output file

or
vlc rtsp://192.168.0.9:554 -V x11 --sout file/ogg:<file_name>.mov

Note 1: It's just if the parameter value is specified it will be applied. The call can have mixed specified and unspecified parameters.

Note 2: The new value is read on the next call.

Keeping settings after power off
http://192.168.0.9 -> "Parameter Editor"

Scroll to the 2nd table.
* "Save" button
* Optionally write some comment and press "Update" to the right of it. Next time the camera will boot with these settings.
General planning
The general schedule planning for the project can be seen below:

You should notice that there is a somewhat large period before the actual shooting takes place. This period is dedicated to research and documentation on the process, especially about everything that relates to the use of the camera for the shooting.
Return to community
The research should focus on the incertain terrains of:

1. How to record sound with the camera or using external devices;
2. Establish the editing workflow in linux and the image post-production workflow in linux. This project considers working only with free software. This step is the continuation of the research presented here and here;

3. Automate via scripts the steps of:
*(a) files convertion prior to editing (piped scripting);

There is already a lot of documentation about these steps spread throughout the wiki, but gathering them, testing them and developing over them in a production environment and in a blog that reflects this environment may be of good use to anyone interested in the Apertus project or in the Elephel camera.The idea is to make this documentation easily accessible to anyone. What can be expected are timely updates on the blog created for the project and especial reports with the conclusions of these steps researches – you could see those as articles that would put all the drafts from the blog together.

Due to sponsorship issues, it is yet to be decided whether the blog for the project will be in English or in Portuguese, but since the Apertus community communicates mainly in English, the especial reports are bound to be in that language. Depending on their interest to the Portuguese-speaking public and on the time we may have, they may also be translated to Portuguese. Examples on how these articles would be can be found here and here.]
An example of the kind of technical steps we will have to solve can be seen below. It shows the automation scripts that will have to be made in order to help production during the editing and post-processing steps:

Once we have the technical part we will depend upon solved, we should hopefully arrive at the shooting point confident on the gear we are using and concentrate solely on language.

Workshops
To help drawing attention to the project and to help financing at least some of the basic structure, we consider running some production workshops to talk about the movie and the production process to anyone who might be interested, but with especial attention to the linux community.

There are several research and educational projects that use Elphel cameras. Some are already active, others just starting or only in planning stage. We believe that scientific research is the application area where the open nature of our products is the most beneficial. The shortage of the powerful and at the same time open and flexible hardware was that "itch" that led me to start Elphel.

Research Projects
There are several research and educational projects that use Elphel cameras. Some are already active, others just starting or only in planning stage. We believe that scientific research is the application area where the open nature of our products is the most beneficial. The shortage of the powerful and at the same time open and flexible hardware was that "itch" that led me to start Elphel.

This page is started to provide resources to those who already uses or plans to use Elphel cameras. This is wiki, so please feel free to add you project description/link below.--Andrey.filippov 14:59, 29 April 2007 (CDT)
Objectives
General planning
The general schedule planning for the project can be better previewed in this link. You should notice that there is a somewhat large period before the actual shooting takes place. This period is dedicated to research and documentation on the process, especially about everything that relates to the use of the camera for the shooting. Such uses include:

- how to set up the camera;
- how to set up and how to decide which lenses to use (is there a need for a mini35 adaptor?);
- how to do the recording using the in-development programs (ElphelVision, DNG Converter) and therefore trying to give some feedback and interface on their developments;
- how to preview the recorded video (on VLC, MPLayer);
- how to record sound with the camera or using external devices;
- how to edit it and how to do the image post-production to it.

There is already a lot of documentation about these steps spread throughout the wiki, but gathering them, testing them and developing over them in a production environment and in a blog that reflects this environment may be of good use to anyone interested in the Apertus project or in the Elephel camera.

The idea is to make this documentation easily accessible to anyone.

Once we have the technical part we will depend upon solved, we should hopefully arrive at the shooting point confident on the gear we are using and concentrate solely on language.

It must be pondered that how we are going to shoot depends on the results we may or may not have achieved on financing the movie. Basically, we should consider something between all-voluntary work and a complete professional environment, with everyone getting paid and with more time to dedicate to the movie. We have to be prepared to both scenarios.
Workshops
To help drawing attention to the project and to help financing at least some of the basic structure, we consider running some production workshops to talk about the movie and the production process to anyone who might be interested, but with especial attention to the linux community. Those workshops will be technical-based and, without being too optimistic, there is good chance of finding partners to them.
