Elphel Envmap Project

The aim of our project is to develop an intuitive and thus easy to use program to allow the creation of Envmaps during shooting a video sequence with an Elphel camera.

What is an Envmap and what's their benefit In essence an Envmap allows the reflections of a scene to be mapped to a composite object (a lucid explanation is given here: [1]). In today's cinema world many scene are composited and often contain 3D models; to blend these objects precisely and believably with a scene requires the use of Envmaps.

There are many techniques for producing Envmaps and they often use a silver sphere. Place the sphere in a scene and photographic it; do a few manipulations on the photo and you have an Envmap. It is a tricky and time consuming method! Our project's intention is to do this within the Elphel camera and no precisely placed silver sphere, making it a quicker task and easily applicable to any scene you shoot.
